“Dear Mr. President” and Other Songs, Same Addressee

If you’re anything like me, you’ve fantasized about having a word with 47. The following artists, in their own way, have each actually achieved this. While “Dear Mr. President” issues an open letter via song to our 43rd (Republican) President, “Commander in Chief” addresses 45, who’s now also 47. And the third describes issues many of us have had with 45/47.
I. “Dear Mr. President” by Pink, featuring the Indigo Girls (2006)
It’s clear, powerful, and a beautiful blending of voices. The lyrics, intended for George W. Bush and reprinted below, are applicable to today’s leadership as well, don’t you think?
Dear Mr. PresidentCome take a walk with meLet’s pretend we’re just two people andYou’re not better than meI’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep? What do you feel when you look in the mirror? Are you proud?
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eyeAnd tell me why?
Dear Mr. PresidentWere you a lonely boy?…How can you sayNo child is left behind? We’re not dumb, and we’re not blindThey’re all sitting in your cellsWhile you pave the road to hell
What kind of father would take his own daughter’s rights away? And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?I can only imagine what the first lady has to sayYou’ve come a long way from whiskey and cocaine
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye?
Let me tell you ’bout hard workMinimum wage with a baby on the wayLet me tell you ’bout hard workRebuilding your house after the bombs took them awayLet me tell you ’bout hard workBuilding a bed out of a cardboard boxLet me tell you ’bout hard work…You don’t know nothing ’bout hard work…

Dear Mr. PresidentYou’d never take a walk with meWould you?

II. “Commander in Chief” by Demi Lovato (2020)

Another open letter, this time to 45, AKA Trump 1.0:

…If I did the things you doI couldn’t sleep, seriouslyDo you even know the truth?

We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyingWhile you line your pockets deepCommander in chief, how does it feel to still be able to breathe?…

III. “Tin Foil Hat” by Todd Rundgren, featuring Donald Fagen (2017)

Even back then the Wannabe King in Trump was readily recognized.

…’Cause the man in the tin foil hat
Is tweeting like a teenage girl
He puts the Pluto in plutocrat
But it’s gonna be a huge huge huge new world

He hasn’t got the time for losers
Unless they do as he commands
He’s writing checks to his accusers
With those tiny little hands

Because the man in the tin foil hat
Is sitting on the throne tonight
It kinda feels like a coup d’etat
But it’s gonna be a huge huge huge new world…

The video below features a TV newscaster (as ape with a tin foil hat) and satiric headlines as the song plays:

See you in the streets for No Kings, March 28th!
