“Face COVID”: Help from Dr. Russ Harris’s ACT

As mentioned in a previous post about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dr. Russ Harris has authored several books on the subject. In addition, he regularly offers Free Stuff on his website, Act Mindfully. His newest free thing has to do with coping with the COVID crisis: “Face COVID.

This 12-page tract, Face COVID: How to Respond Effectively to the Corona Crisis,” contains “a set of practical steps…using the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).” Here are those steps:

F = Focus on what’s in your control
A = Acknowledge your thoughts & feelings
C = Come back into your body
E = Engage in what you’re doing

C = Committed action
O = Opening up
V = Values
I = Identify resources
D = Disinfect & distance

In the remainder of Harris’s brief and easy to understand pamphlet, each step is given a thoughtful and thorough explanation.

To get you a little better acquainted with Harris’s work, the following are selected quotes from two of his books, The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living and ACT with Love: Stop Struggling, Reconcile Differences, and Strengthen Your Relationship with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

A = Accept your thoughts and feelings and be present. C = Connect with your values. T = Take effective action.

Psychological flexibility is the ability to adapt to a situation with awareness, openness, and focus and to take effective action, guided by your values.

Mindfulness + Values + Action = Psychological Flexibility.

Stop trying to control how you feel, and instead take control of what you do.

Develop the courage to solve those problems that can be solved, the serenity to accept those problems that can’t be solved, and the wisdom to know the difference.
