“My Mind” by Yebba: And Four Other Songs About Mental Pain

Below are five classic songs about mental pain, starting with Yebba‘s “My Mind.” Although sad and deeply moving music can be cathartic and comforting, consider your own current mood and needs before proceeding.

I. “My Mind” by Yebba (2016)

Yebba’s highly anticipated second album will be released tomorrow. If you have never seen/heard her powerful and extremely heartfelt “My Mind,” this may be a good time to listen.

This song eventually appeared on her first studio album, Dawn (2021), which happens to be a tribute to her mother who died by suicide. (“My Mind,” however, was written before that occurred.)

…I’m ’bout to lose my
I, oh, I am, I
I’m ’bout to lose my
My mind, my mind, my mind…

II. “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. (1992)

In the intro to Aloe Blaccs fine video version from 2024, he states, “I love using music for positive social transformation. R.E.M. wrote ‘Everybody Hurts’ to save lives, specifically to help stop teens from committing suicide. It’s a touching and absorbing ballad that serves a higher purpose. I believe when you can use music to bring about positive social change, you’re serving your highest purpose. Singing this song makes me reflect on all the friends lost to suicide and reminds me how important it is for everyone to be there for others.”

When your day is longAnd the night, the night is yours aloneWhen you’re sure you’ve had enoughOf this life, well hang on
Don’t let yourself go‘Cause everybody criesEverybody hurts sometimes…
Another great 2024 cover is by the ever-soulful Al Green:

III. “Mad World” by Tears for Fears (1982)
This song was reportedly based on the unhappy childhoods of two Tears for Fears members:
…And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very mad world, mad world…
Gary Jules made it a hit again with his 2001 cover, and in all, over 200 versions have been recorded by various artists. I’m partial to what Adam Lambert did with it on American Idol in 2009.

IV. “lovely” by Billie Eilish & Khalid (2018)
“A sliver of hope lives in the gorgeous voices of two humans, finding solidarity in their shared pain,” states American Songwriter about this original.
...Lookin’ for a better place (lookin’ for a better place)Something’s on my mind (mind)Always in my head space
But I know some day I’ll make it out of hereEven if it takes all night or a hundred yearsNeed a place to hide, but I can’t find one nearWanna feel alive, outside I can’t fight my fear

Isn’t it lovely, all alone?Heart made of glass, my mind of stone…

V. “OK Not to be OK” by Marshmello & Demi Lovato (2020)

Arguably, the line “It’s okay not to be okay” found an even better home several years before this tune came out, but I’ve already covered “Who You Are” by Jessie J in a post on self-esteem songs.

Released on World Suicide Prevention Day and in support of organization Hope for the Day, “OK not to be OK” is a line that now clicks with many in the throes of difficulty.

…Don’t get lost in the momentOr give up when you’re closestAll you need is somebody to say

It’s okay not to be okay…
